Why we exist
Every day, millions of people upload sensitive files to online tools - tax documents, personal photos, contracts, medical records. Most of these tools store your files on their servers, sometimes indefinitely. Some scan them, some sell metadata, and most track you across the web.
We started topriv because we believed there had to be a better way. A way to give people powerful tools without asking them to give up their privacy in return.
What we believe
Privacy isn't a feature you bolt on - it's a foundation you build on. Every tool we create starts with one question: how do we do this without touching your data?
- If we can process it in memory, we will - nothing touches the disk.
- If we can delete it immediately, we do - not in an hour, not in a day, immediately.
- If we don't need to know who you are, we don't ask - no accounts, no emails, no tracking.
Our Story
topriv started because we saw a problem hiding in plain sight. Millions of people were uploading their most sensitive files - financial documents, legal contracts, personal photographs, medical records - to online services that store, analyze, and in many cases profit from that data. These services operate under lengthy terms of service that most users never read, and they retain files far longer than anyone realizes.
We decided to take a different path. We set out to build tools that process everything either locally in the browser or in-memory on our servers with zero retention. When you use a topriv product, your file exists in server memory only for the duration of the operation. The moment your converted or processed file is ready for download, the original is purged. There is no caching layer, no backup queue, no "we delete it within 24 hours" policy. It is gone immediately.
Our first product, PrivConvert, launched as a free file converter with over 120 tools covering images, PDFs, documents, audio, video, and developer formats. Every conversion happens in memory. Since then, we have launched PrivDrop for end-to-end encrypted file sharing and the .priv open encrypted format - all built on the same zero-knowledge principles that define everything we do.
Our Values
Everything we build is guided by four core values that we refuse to compromise on, regardless of growth pressure or market trends:
- Privacy by Default - Privacy is not a toggle buried in settings. Every topriv product is private from the first interaction. There is no opt-in required because there is nothing invasive to opt out of. We architect our systems so that privacy is the only possible outcome, not a best-case scenario.
- Transparency - We tell you exactly what happens to your data at every step. Our open-source projects let you verify our claims by reading the code yourself. We do not hide behind vague privacy policies or marketing language. If we cannot explain how a feature works in plain terms, we redesign it until we can.
- No Tracking - We do not use first-party analytics to profile users. We do not fingerprint browsers. We do not build behavioral models. We do not set tracking cookies. We do not sell data to advertisers or data brokers. Your usage of our tools is your business, not ours.
- Free for Everyone - Privacy is a right, not a premium feature. The core functionality of every topriv product is free with no account required. We believe that gating privacy behind a paywall creates a two-tiered internet where only those who can afford it get to keep their data safe. We refuse to participate in that model.
Our approach
We don't run ads that track you. We don't sell your data. We don't build user profiles. Our business model is simple: build great tools, earn trust, and grow from there.
We believe that when privacy is the default - not the exception - everyone benefits. The internet was built on open standards and the free exchange of information. Somewhere along the way, that vision was co-opted by surveillance capitalism. We are building tools that bring it back to its roots - powerful, accessible, and respectful of the people who use them.
